Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey & Grounds Tour)
This large country house and estate in Hampshire has been the ancestrial home of the Earl of Carnarvon. More recently it has been the main filming location for the British period drama Downton Abbey.
Originally built in 1839 on the foundations of a medieval palace, it underwent large remodelling in the 19th century. It became the home to many Egyptian artefacts after the 5th Earl of Carnarvon sponsored many excavations which led to the discovery of several notable tombs including the tomb of Tutankhamun. Inside the castle visitors can see exhibitions directly relating to these excavations.
Today, the castle has seen a revival with the TV series Downton Abbey being filmed there. It has become a very popular destination for school groups across many disciplines and of all ages. (Please note that demand to visit this castle is high and only school group tours can be arranged).

Day 1 | Morning: Depart from school and travel to Highclere Castle in Hampshire. Afternoon: Upon arrival your group will gain admission to visit the castle where the hit ITV show Downton Abbey is filmed. School groups have a choice of visiting 2 different exhibitions. A collection of Egyptian antiquities from over 4,000 years ago or the path the 5th Earl and Howard Carter discovered Tutanhamun’s tomb. Evening: Depart from Highclere Castle in the early evening and travel back to school. End of tour. |
Sights & places of interest in Highclere Castle
This large room in the castle is considered the heart of the house. It was designed for the 4th Earl with rich ornate decorations throughout and amazing leather wall coverings brought back from Spain.
The 5th Earl of Carnarvon spent much time in Egypt and was responsible for the discovery of many Egyptian tombs. Throughout his lifetime he amassed a great collection of Egyptian artefacts which can now be viewed within the castle.
Learn about the relationship between the 5th Earl Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter who worked together for 16 years and excavated much of the Valley of the Kings. Their partnership lead to the discovery of Tutankhamun.
The castle has beautifully landscaped gardens which are open to the public to explore.
