Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) Machynlleth, Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is dedicated to showing and teaching all things relating to sustainable development. Despite its name, the centre no longer focuses solely on alternative technology but also provides information on sustainable architecture, organic farming, and ecological friendly living.

The centre operates educational programmes for many schools types and offer excellent site visits which your group will find both fascinating and useful. The centre is spread out over 40 acres with many interactive displays and exhibits such as: a low energy house, displays of organic gardening methods, straw bale and rammed earth buildings as well as Britain’s largest green bookshop to name just a few. The centre also has a water-balanced funicular which allows you to see the entire centre down below.

The centre offers on-site accommodation for groups wishing to stay for longer periods as well as offers short stay courses. For more information please enquire.

Example itinerary

Day 1

Morning: Departure from school and travel to Machynlleth, Wales.

Afternoon: Arrival at Centre for Alternative Technology and admission. Group is shown around centre with guide. Short courses or specific lessons available upon request.

Evening: Departure from CAT if off-site accommodation is used. Overnight stay.

Day2

Morning: After breakfast, travel back to Centre for Alternative Technology for further lessons or exploration or travel to North Wales to  Caernarfon and Snowdonia National Park.

Afternoon: Enjoy the lovely Welsh country side and town or Caernarfon at your leisure.

Evening: Travel back to school. End of tour.

Caernarfon Castle
